Spiritual Growth

Rimbey Christian School is where the truth of God is taught in all areas of curriculum.  Using the Alberta curriculum as the basis for all teaching, a biblical perspective is woven through.  The students are then encouraged to respond to these teachings by living their life in such a way that honors God and each other.

We are a parent-governed school, and the school is an extension of what is taught at home.  Parents are also challenged to grow in their faith as a result of their interactions with the school. Our ultimate goal at this school is to bring glory to God, through our faith and our actions.

Area of spiritual growth at RCS:

  • volunteer  squad: volunteering in the neighborhood to build community
  • chapels: two times per month, with guest pastors leading once a month
  • buddies: younger students are partnered up with older students in order to foster community within the school
  • theme this year is “Kids of the King”, where we will be looking at what it means to be a child of the King.  How do we act as a kingdom citizen and how do we treat others? What is our role in this world and how do we respond to the King’s calling?

Teaching for Transformation

“The biblical truth that resounds in our Christian school’s curriculum is that all things belong to God. It is important that we not presume that this truth is obvious or apparent to all. The task of a Christian school teacher is to expose God’s fingerprints in all things.
“Quentin Schultz affirms that the task of Christian educators need not be to restrict God’s dominion but to expose the broad scope of God’s hand in everything.  He writes, “God invites us to become caretakers of renewal in everything we do, thereby praising God and pointing others to the Lord’s good works…the original meaning of “piety” was faithfulness in everything, not merely in church or devotional practices” (Schultz, 2005)

“Thus, a teacher’s task is one of exposing creation rather than trying to add to it.  We do this by teaching under the principle of all things. God created all things.  Even after the fall, which indeed affects and infects all things, creation remains good. Redemption impacts all things, redirecting them to their God designated purposes. Someday, all things will be fully restored but the work of renewal begins now and we are privileged to be co-workers with God in this process. This understanding is an integral part of understanding a transformational worldview. When teachers reflect on learning through this perspective, we expose God in all things and help our students to develop the understanding that there is not an area where God’s dominion does not reach.”  (Teaching for Transformation: A guide for developing Christian Curriculum)

TfT (Teaching for Transformation) offers us new hope.  The model that we will be learning about in our professional development days will provide a framework for the development of authentic and integral Christian learning experiences that are grounded in a transformational worldview with a focus in the Biblical story. It will help us as teachers to develop a foundational understanding for the topics that we teach and help us truly teach for transformation.  ( adapted from: Teaching for Transformation: A guide for developing Christian Curriculum)

Teaching for Transformation - Monthly Chapel Lesson and Student Work Display

October - Mr. Payson - Idolatry Discerning - "The best way for us to discern between what is from God and what is false is to get to know God better." Students searched the Bible to find names for God.

November - Mrs. Nieuwenhuis - Image Reflecting - "God created us to: Have a body and a soul- breath of God; Live in fellowship; have dominion over the earth, be caretakers of the earth, and make choices.  We are a special creation, created in His likeness.  We need God's spirit working through us in order to reflect God's image.  We reflect God's image when we create things, stand up for the truth, take care of God's world, show mercy and forgiveness, are loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. Jesus' light shines through you so that when others see you, they really see Jesus IN you.  Likewise, when we look at others who love Jesus, we can learn to see Him in them.  We can be Jesus' arms and feet and reflect His love everyday in our world."

December - Mrs. Greentree - Beauty Creating - In chapel we learned in Genesis that God saw what He created and it was good, but what we create can be just as pleasing to God. Beauty creating is not just arts and crafts but much more, from singing in chapel - when we make a joyful noise, working on our friendships in the classroom and encourage each other, writing poetry, or working on math.  When we try our hardest at school work, art projects, friendships we are adding to the beauty that God has created and it pleases Him.  All that we do is beauty creating, from a math word problem and solution, to the robotics in jr. high to the arts and crafts in Kindergarten.  When we use our hands to create and we do our best then we are honouring and pleasing to God.

January - Ms. Semenyna - Pastor Reg of the New Life Fellowship Church led chapel and taught us about being just to those less fortunate.  We are to seek ways to provide for the poor and needy among us and in the world.  Ms. Semenyna also showed us that justice means standing up for those who are oppressed, and that we should "Do unto others, as we would have them do unto you."  Furthermore, we are to seek out what is right and to help anyone who is in need or who is being treated unfairly.

February - Pastor Rick Abma of the Woodynook Christian Reformed Church came to lead chapel.  He shared with the students how God breathed life into us and made us alive.  Likewise, when we use the creative gifts God has given us to make something we share the life and breath of God with others.
